Second Line to the Polls Event to Kick Off Early Voting in New Orleans

Community Organizations Join Forces to Turn Out the Vote for the Nov. 5 Election

October 17, 2024, NEW ORLEANS—New Orleans community members will celebrate the first day of early voting at the Second Line to the Polls on Friday, October 18 at 12:30 p.m. Step Up Louisiana, Voice of the Experienced, Power Coalition for Equity and Justice and The First 72+ are spearheading the event to increase voter engagement and turnout during Louisiana’s early voting window between October 18-29.

WHAT: Second Line to the Polls - New Orleans Early Voting Kickoff

WHEN: Friday, October 18, 12:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

WHERE: Starts at Armstrong Park, 701 N Rampart St; Ends at City Hall, 1300 Perdido St

WHO: All New Orleans community members are welcome; event is free and open to the public

Friday’s event will feature performances by Le Bon Ton Babydolls and The New Orleans Rascals. Speakers at the event will include:

  • Pastor Tyrone Smith, The First 72+

  • Charles Amos, VOTE Chapter Organizer

  • Yasmonique Hookfin, Power Coalition Project Manager

  • David Williams, Step Up Louisiana member-organizer

  • Deon Haywood, Women with a Vision Executive Director

This event is part of Step Up Louisiana’s Fall for Liberation campaign, an organizing drive that has trained 50 Southeast Louisiana residents on community, labor and electoral organizing. Since its launch in September, organizers have knocked on tens of thousands of doors and had thousands of conversations with workers and voters in their communities to increase voter engagement and reshape upcoming elections in Baton Rouge, New Orleans and Jefferson Parish.

Step Up Louisiana also spearheaded the New Orleans Workers’ Bill of Rights campaign, advocating to amend the city’s home rule charter to protect workers’ rights to a living wage, healthcare, paid leave and to organize for better conditions in the Nov. 5 election.
